How We Rank Online Casinos — Complete Methodology

Every casino on this site has been evaluated using the same 40+ criteria organised into six weighted dimensions. No casino pays for a higher score. This page explains exactly what we test, how we weight it, and how we update our rankings each week.

Editorial Independence — Our Core Commitment

Internet Casino Rankings earns revenue through affiliate links — if you register at a casino via our links, we may receive a commission at no cost to you. This commercial relationship has zero influence on our rankings. A casino with a strong affiliate programme that performs poorly on our criteria will rank poorly, or not appear at all. We have removed casinos from our list despite losing significant affiliate revenue when their standards dropped below our thresholds. Our ranking scores are determined entirely by the criteria below.

01
Security & Licensing
Verified license · SSL · Fair games · Player funds
25%

The most heavily weighted dimension. A casino that fails on security and licensing is removed from our list regardless of how well it scores elsewhere. We verify every license directly with the issuing regulatory authority before including a casino in our database.

License verification: We check the license number directly on the regulator's official database. MGA, UKGC, Gibraltar, and Curaçao licenses are all verified as active at the time of review.
SSL encryption: All pages, including the cashier and login, must use valid HTTPS with a current certificate.
RNG certification: Games must carry a current audit certificate from eCOGRA, iTech Labs, GLI, or an equivalent independent testing laboratory.
Player fund segregation: We check whether the casino discloses how player deposits are held, and whether segregated funds are mentioned in terms or licensing documentation.
Complaint history: We check AskGamblers, Casino Guru, and Trustpilot for patterns of unresolved disputes. A high rate of legitimately upheld complaints against a casino results in disqualification.
Responsible gambling tools: Deposit limits, self-exclusion, and reality checks must all be present and functional.
02
Payout Speed & RTP
Real withdrawal tests · Published RTP · Processing times
20%

We test withdrawals with real money at every casino we review. Payout speed is measured from withdrawal request to funds confirmed received in our account. We test multiple payment methods where possible.

Withdrawal speed testing: Real deposits, real play, real withdrawal requests. Amounts range from $50 to $500. Times are measured and recorded.
Consistency: We test multiple withdrawals over time to confirm speed is consistent — not artificially fast for the first test.
Published RTP: Casinos that display verified RTP figures for their games score higher than those that do not.
Friction-free process: We penalise casinos that manufacture delays — requesting documents that were already submitted, moving withdrawal requests to "pending" repeatedly, or requiring additional verification steps that were not disclosed upfront.
03
Bonus Fairness
Wagering requirements · Win caps · Game restrictions · Transparency
18%

We read the full bonus terms — not just the headline offer. Wagering requirements, win caps, game contribution rates, maximum bet limits, and expiry dates are all recorded and scored.

Wagering requirement: 0–20× scores highest. 20–30× is acceptable. Above 40× scores poorly. Above 60× results in a significant penalty.
Transparency: Bonus terms must be clearly accessible before claiming. Hidden or deliberately complex terms result in penalties.
Win cap: No-cap or high-cap bonuses score better than those with $50 caps that make large wins irrelevant.
No-wagering options: Casinos that offer genuine no-wagering free spins or cashback score a bonus in this dimension.
04
Software Quality
Providers · Game variety · Mobile · Loading speed
17%

We evaluate the game library, software providers, mobile performance, and overall user experience. Quality is weighted more heavily than quantity.

Provider quality: Games from Pragmatic Play, NetEnt, Evolution, Microgaming, Play'n GO, and other certified providers score higher than unknown or uncertified developers.
Game variety: Coverage across slots, table games, live dealer, and video poker. A diverse library serves a wider range of player preferences.
Mobile performance: We test in a mobile browser on both iOS and Android. Loading speed, navigation, and cashier functionality are all assessed.
Demo mode: Availability of free play on slots and table games before depositing is a positive factor.
05
Customer Support
Response time · Quality · Availability · Channels
12%

We contact support anonymously with standardised beginner questions about deposits, withdrawals, and bonus terms. We measure time to first response and quality of the answer.

Response time: Under 2 minutes for live chat scores highest. Over 10 minutes scores poorly. Email responses within 24 hours are the minimum acceptable standard.
24/7 availability: Casinos with round-the-clock live chat score higher than those with limited hours.
Human agents: We penalise chatbots that cannot escalate to a human agent within a reasonable time.
Answer quality: We assess whether the agent actually answered the question or deflected with generic responses.
06
Banking Options
Methods · Fees · Minimums · Withdrawal compatibility
8%

We evaluate the range of payment methods available for both deposits and withdrawals, fees, and minimum transaction thresholds.

Method variety: Cards, e-wallets, cryptocurrency, and bank transfer coverage all contribute to a higher score.
Withdrawal compatibility: Casinos where the same method can be used for both deposits and withdrawals score higher. Deposit-only methods that force alternative withdrawal routes score lower.
Zero fee policy: Casinos that charge no deposit or withdrawal fees score above those with fee structures.
Low minimums: A $5–$10 minimum deposit and withdrawal threshold scores better than $50+ minimums that exclude budget players.

How Often Do We Update Our Casino Rankings?

Rankings are reviewed and updated every Monday. The update process covers: fresh payout speed tests on any casino where our last test is more than 30 days old, monitoring of AskGamblers and Casino Guru for new unresolved complaints, checking for changes to bonus terms or licensing status, and incorporating any direct player reports submitted via our contact page.

When a casino is removed from our rankings — which happens several times per year — we do not restore it until it has passed a fresh evaluation cycle. The removal reason is documented internally but we only publish it publicly once it has been confirmed through regulatory channels or independent verification.

What We Do Not Score

Affiliate commission rates, marketing spend, or whether a casino has an existing commercial relationship with this site have zero weight in our scoring model. Casino design and branding aesthetics are not scored. The number of awards a casino claims to have won is not scored — industry awards are often pay-to-enter.

About This Methodology

This scoring methodology has been refined over 26 years of reviewing online casinos. The weighting reflects our experience of what matters most to players — security first, then reliable payouts, then fair bonuses. The methodology is reviewed annually and updated when the industry changes in ways that require new criteria.

We welcome questions about our methodology via our contact page. If you believe a casino has been scored inaccurately, we investigate every substantiated claim and update scores where evidence supports a change.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you rank online casinos?
We use a weighted composite score across six dimensions: Security and Licensing (25%), Payout Speed and RTP (20%), Bonus Fairness (18%), Software Quality (17%), Customer Support (12%), and Banking Options (8%). Each casino is tested with a real funded account — real deposits, real games, real withdrawal requests. Rankings are updated every Monday.
Do casinos pay to be ranked higher?
No. We earn affiliate commissions when players register via our links, but this has zero influence on ranking scores. We have removed casinos from our list despite losing significant revenue when their standards dropped. The ranking is determined entirely by the criteria above.
How do you test withdrawals?
We create real accounts, make real deposits, play through a small amount, and request withdrawals. We measure the time from request submission to funds confirmed received. We test multiple payment methods where available and repeat tests at least every 30 days for casinos in our top rankings. Any casino that delays, obstructs, or refuses a legitimate withdrawal without explanation is removed from our recommendations.
Why is Security weighted highest at 25%?
Because a casino without a valid license and proper security measures is fundamentally unsafe regardless of how good its games or bonuses are. A 10/10 game library at an unlicensed casino is worthless if the casino can refuse to pay and you have no regulatory recourse. Security is the non-negotiable foundation — everything else builds on it.
How do you handle complaints about casinos you recommend?
We monitor AskGamblers and Casino Guru continuously. When a new complaint appears about a casino we recommend, we assess whether it is isolated or part of a pattern. A single complaint with a legitimate casino response is noted. A pattern of similar unresolved complaints triggers a re-evaluation and potential score adjustment. Casinos that fail re-evaluation are removed from our recommendations until the issue is resolved and independently verified.
Can I suggest a casino for review?
Yes — use our contact page. We review all suggestions against our standard methodology. Suggested casinos go through the same evaluation process as any other casino we discover independently. Being suggested does not guarantee inclusion, and we do not accept payment for reviews regardless of the outcome.
